half marathon man

Half marathon training is half over at this point. The Race for the Roses isn’t that far away and I’m getting excited to run my first 13.1. This week has had me thinking of all that I’ve learned about running in the past few months…

  1. I know that I have a rock-solid 10:20min/mile pace that is only getting better.
  2. I know my resting (60) and peak (192) heart-rates, and that I average 166 bpm on a typical run.
  3. I know that data is both cool and useful.
  4. I know that I’m always happy that I got up to run early, even if early is 6am.
  5. I know that, no matter how cold it is, I won’t notice it after a half-mile.
  6. I know that, at 30 degrees outside, I don’t need more than shorts, a hat, thin gloves, and a long-sleeve tee.
  7. I know that listening to “This American Life” while running is not motivating at all.
  8. I know that I can at least run 7 miles without stopping.
  9. I know that bodyglide is not an adequate substitute for underwear.
  10. I know that asthma is a just another part of the challenge.
  11. I know that podiatry works.
  12. …and I know I couldn’t do it without M.

    1. My running clothes are a crayola box of ramshackle bits and pieces that I've used for various other sports. It works for me at the moment, but I might have to invest in something lighter-weight when summer gets here.

And, yes, bodyglide. It can do in a pinch, but not advised for “alternative uses”.
